What is the difference (in smell) between a perfume for men and one for women? How do I tell?

sometimes it's hard to tell, especially with new mens fragrance being sweeter and womens being muskier. my rule of thumb is if it smells like flowers or food, it's a womans. if it smells like soap or plants it's mens. but not always

men's cologne is usually more musky, while women's are fruity and flowery
